What you get
- Estimated CEFR level, from A1 to C1
- A breakdown of how you did in each skill
- The Fluentra course to start with
This is an estimate, not a certificate. Speaking and writing aren't tested. For an official result, take a recognised exam.
How the test works
There are 30 questions in two parts. The first part covers a range of levels, and the second adapts to how you did. There's no timer, and most people finish in about 12 to 15 minutes.
What the CEFR levels mean
CEFR, the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, describes what you can do in a language. CEFR levels explained goes through each one in more detail.
| Level | In practice | Course |
|---|---|---|
| A1 | You can use simple everyday phrases and introduce yourself. | Beginner English |
| A2 | You can handle routine tasks and talk about your background and daily life. | Elementary English |
| B1 | You can deal with most travel situations and describe experiences and plans. | Intermediate English |
| B2 | You can follow complex texts and talk with fluent speakers without much strain. | Upper-Intermediate English |
| C1 | You can use English flexibly for work and study, and understand longer, demanding texts. | Advanced English |
About the level test
Is the Fluentra English level test free?
Yes. The test is free and you see your full result without creating an account. An account is only needed if you want to save the result or start a course.
How long does it take?
About 12 to 15 minutes. There are 30 questions in two parts and no timer. The second part adapts to how you did in the first.
What does it test?
Grammar, vocabulary, reading and listening. Speaking and writing are not tested, so the result describes what you understand and recognise rather than how you speak or write.
Is the result an official certificate?
No. You get an estimated CEFR level from A1 to C1 to help you choose where to start. It is a placement guide, not a certificate, and it does not estimate levels above C1.
Can I take it again?
Yes. We recommend waiting about 30 days, because your level rarely changes in a few days. A retake uses different questions.
